As a group of tired but proud athletes head back to Nova Scotia, and another group eagerly travel to Red Deer, Alta., Team Nova Scotia is celebrating its week one successes of the 2019 Canada Winter Games.
“This first week of competition was exciting and rewarding for Team Nova Scotia. Our athletes, coaches and managers demonstrated integrity on and off the playing field while showcasing a quality competitive spirit,” said Cathy Burton, Team Nova Scotia’s chef de mission. “We are proud of Team Nova Scotia and their efforts this week and can’t wait to welcome our next group of athletes to the Games.”
Team Nova Scotia collected three medals, a silver and two bronze, in the first week.
Artistic gymnasts Christopher Bearne, Halifax, Matthew Brown Dartmouth, Vincent d’Entremont, Hebbville, Lunenburg Co., Landon Duquette, Middle Sackville, Andrew Gallant, Dartmouth and Alex Watters, Williamswood, Halifax Regional Municipality, earned a bronze in the male team event on Feb. 18.
Boxer Alex Bulgaru, Halifax, earned a silver medal in the 64 kilogram weight class, while Matthew Ross, New Waterford, earned a bronze in the 69 kilogram weight class. Both medalled on Feb. 20.
“I’m so grateful to have had the chance to represent Nova Scotia at these games. It’s such a unique opportunity and it’s something I’ll never forget,” said Carmen Vanwhychen, a table tennis athlete from Middle Musquodoboit, Halifax Regional Municipality. “From competing against the best table tennis players in Canada, meeting new people and spending time with my teammates, everything was so much fun.”
Some other notable finishes include:
boxer Matthew Fraser, Antigonish, fourth in 56 kilogram weight class
- boxer Matt MacDonald, Sydney Mines, fifth in 75 kilogram weight class
- artistic gymnast Alex Watters, fourth in parallel bars and fifth in floor, horizonal bar and rings
“I’m very excited to win medals for Nova Scotia. I’m a proud Nova Scotian and I wanted our athletes to be here as competitors, not participants. And I think they did Nova Scotia proud,” said boxing head coach Wayne Gordon of Lower Sackville.
